Equality and Diversity in the Workplace

Equality is relevant in all workplaces, regardless of whether the business employs two people or two hundred people, irrespective of whether they work remotely, in an office, a warehouse or on a shop floor. It is about ensuring that everybody has the same access to the same opportunities without any discrimination. Diversity takes into account differences between people and groups of people, by placing a positive value on those differences. A diverse and inclusive workplace values people's different backgrounds, knowledge, skills, and experiences, and uses these differences to create a productive and effective workforce.

Managing both equality and diversity is equally important as it impacts on all the employees working in an organisation. Business cases have proven that biases and discrimination within the workplace can impede business growth and productivity and therefore, many businesses look beyond any legal considerations and policies to effectively promote equality and diversity to improve productivity, opportunity, and competitiveness.

Choice of research project

Students are to choose their own research topic for this unit. Strong research projects are those with clear, well focused and defined objectives. A central skill in selecting a research objective is the ability to select a suitable and focused research objective. One of the best ways to do this is to put it in the form of a question.
Students should be encouraged by tutors to discuss a variety of topics related to the theme to generate ideas for a good research objective.

The range of topics discussed could cover the following:

• Behaviours that support equality and diversity in the workplace
• Managing cultural diversity in the workplace
• Gender equality in leadership and management
• Workplace discrimination
• The work-life balance and enrichment experiences

Your tutor will assist you to help choose a research project topic. You should complete the research proposal form and gain agreement for the project from your tutor.

You will develop research aims, objectives and outcomes. The research objective should broaden your understanding and perspectives of the subject. The topic you choose should interest and challenge you. There must also be sufficient research opportunities and available background materials for the research to take place.

A strong research project is one that has clear, has well focused and defined objectives. When choosing the research project you should think carefully about the research objective which needs to be suitable and focused. You should discuss your research project ideas or the research question with your tutor.

The research objective should allow you to broaden your understanding and widen their perspectives by being able to explore, argue, prove, and disprove a particular objective. They should be feasible, novel, ethical, relevant and ultimately of interest to you.

Conducting research

You will conduct research that generates information and knowledge which will form the basis of the research project or research question. This research may be primary research sources for example market research data using qualitative (interviews) and quantitative (questionnaires) data collection. Research may also be secondary research sources for example textbooks, journal and newspapers.

You are encouraged to use secondary research to provide context and then conduct primary data collection. The data collected could then be compared with the findings of the secondary research information. The findings will be analysed and conclusion drawn to form the basis of recommendations.

Project Evidence / Outcomes

You must clearly show the rationale for the project title, an identification of controversial aspects of the title and of the relevant literature/data sources. These literature/theories support the identified research objective/s and include critical evaluation of central arguments paying attention to whether or not the arguments are logically valid. Throughout the research you should be aware of the importance of clear and consistent use of language and the use of a consistent reference system.

You are required to complete the research, analyse the findings and draw conclusions. You must apply both qualitative and quantitative research methods to evaluate the data collected by primary research.

You will also be engaged in reflective study process by explaining how your ideas developed, the significance of the results and what they have learnt about the methodology of the research.

Your assessor must be able to see how project objectives have been met, how you have explored the research material relevant to the project objective, how you have developed and formulated research outcomes and answered your research objectives.

Project Presentation

The presentation of your research project should be suitable for the target audience. You will be guided by your tutor to ensure the presentation contains the main arguments or developments from their project. The presentation length, the nature and levels of materials need to be appropriate for the audience.
