Assignment Brief

SCENARIO:
You are now assigned fully to working with the Engineering Technical staff at the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission on the Airport Authority project. The Utility BOD are engaging your service to provide updates to them and provide technical support to their engineering staff on the various aspects of implementing a 1MW Photovoltaic Solar Park, close to the Piarco International Airport that will be integrated with the power utility supply at the Airport as well provide updates on the country towards developing our electric grid to smart grid status. All design and engineering specification of the PV systems design to be met falls under you duties for the proposed system integration. In addition, the development of the local grid to smart grid status is being looked at and will need your input to answer some questions on its implementation.

You are to provide reports on the following Activities:

Activity 1:
Perform an Analysis of the applications of Power Electronics being used in the various systems of A RENEWABLE ENERGY INTERCONNECTED GRID SYSTEM. Your analysis should include equipment that will use PE and information on any advantages that their use to the system as a whole, may provide.

Activity 2:
i) Determine other industrial applications of Converters (DC -AC, AC-DC, etc). Your report should include other uses aside from the PV system so that a good understanding of their use can be made of for future reference.
ii) Analyse the power electronic converters topologies for the given ones in part i) above. Provide schematic or block diagrams of each with a brief explanation on how they work, This will be used to educate TT technical staff on their operations.

Activity 3: Lab Assessment
i) You are instructed to perform a modelling and simulation of a DC-DC boost Converter Using Matlab and Simulink software. Refer to the converter topology below in the diagram as your model to create and Simulate, You will be assessed via observation to perform this activity correctly.

iii) For this converter, perform a critical analysis to determine its use in the proposed PV system at the Piarco airport. You should include information on its use, advantages, any disadvantages that it may have for its use and any improvements that can be made if any.

Activity 4: Lab Assessment
The senior Electrical Engineer at TTEC, has some concerns about the integration of the proposed PV Solar system with the local utility grid at its location, with respect to the dynamic performance (effect) on the grid when interconnection is made. You have decided that the best way to show this is to use a software model and simulation of the system integration, critically evaluate the simulation results. This will be an individual observation of your ability to look at the model provided and created from Matlab/ Simulink with simulation data to do the required evaluation

You will use PV Syst to create a model of the 1MW PV Grid connected systems , conduct a simulation and provide results. Look at Energy production, losses, taking into consideration Piarco load, energy requirements, self- consumption, demographics of the site location, etc

Activity 5:
You are to investigate the safe operation of the PV RE system that is interconnected to the Piarco airport grid network. Your investigation should include possible issues of cyber security, physical security, etc and its means of protection

Activity 6:
It is proposed later on, that exterior lightings at the site could provide power and electrical energy by a separate stand- alone PV grid system, members of the BOD wants to know the difference, Compile a report showing the difference in operation between off grid and grid interconnected systems, include diagrams for each.

Activity 7:
The Electric Grid that currently exist in Trinidad and Tobago has been in existence for many years, still operating with past technology in many places, while the grid infrastructure has been modified in parts to current technology it's has not achieved what we consider a smart grid status as of date. With the advent of cyber security challenge and the potential problems that they can bring, investigate and compose a written report to the board of Directors of TTEC, on the safe operation of a smart grid citing cyber security issues, new technologies and their solutions. You will do this by presenting a short oral power point presentation of 10-15 minutes where :
You are to discuss the features of a smart grid, you will do this via a 10 min oral presentation and use of ppt slides, to members of the BOD.

Activity 8:
1) A consideration was looked at to include an Energys Storage System ( ESS), as part of the PV system project. Determine the importance of using PE technology in the PV system with ESS.
2) Analyse how power electronics converters will be used in a developed smart grid electrical network
3) List and Evaluate any issues that will potentially come up with the integration of the PV system to the Piarco Airport Point of common coupling (utility). Include any issues with its impact on the utility system electrical transmission and distribution system.

Lab Activity 9:
Critically analyze the integration of the grid with the PV system source via looking at a model of the systems.
