The Purpose of this Assignment:

For an organisation to be competitive both now and in the future, it is vital to understand how current thinking on leadership influences an organisation's planning to meet current and future leadership requirements. This assignment will enable you to demonstrate an understanding of the links between strategic management, leadership and organisational direction, and the skills to be able to apply this understanding within an organisational context.

Scenario:
HSBC Bank plc. is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. HSBC's international network comprises around 7,500 offices in over 80 countries and territories in Europe, the Asia-Pacific region, the Americas, the Middle East and Africa.

You are the Assistant HR Manager at HSBC in the London office. The HR Manager asked to write a report, in it you will have to do the following tasks. In the first part you will have to explain the purpose of the report and provide an overview of the importance of strategic HR. After that you will have to expand the chart to show that you have evaluated and assessed the purpose, the importance and impact of strategic HR management to the achievement of the company's objectives from a medium - long term prospective. To finish this section you will have to explain the link between corporate strategy and human resource management strategy to show their interrelationship and how the human resource management strategy supports and contributes to purposes of HSBC.

Once this first section is finished you will have to analyse the influence of HSBC's requirements and external environmental factors that dictate the need to plan human resources. After that discuss some human resource requirements within HSBC and then assess the human resource requirements for an identified specific situation. Before ending this section you will have to develop a structured human resource plan that utilizes the results of the work you have done adding SMART targets. Furthermore, the plan needs to be critically evaluated to show how it can contribute to the achievement of objectives. Finally you will have to critically evaluate how your human resources plan can contribute to meeting the HSBC's objectives.

Your next task will be to explain the purpose of human resource management policies in the company. After that you have to analyse compliance of the HR policies with legal and regulatory requirements.

In your final task you have to identify and define the structure and culture of HSBC and assess the impact they can have on the human resource management. At this point you have to examine how HR policies are monitored and controlled in HSBC. Furthermore, you are also required to explain the monitoring of human resource management in relation to contributing to organisational goals. Before you end your report you have to identify some performance indicators that can be used and how the effectiveness of human resource management can be judged against these indicators.

Finally, you have to identify and recommend some improvements to the human resource management in HSBC; this has to be done with supported justifications based on an analysis of the company.

Task 1
I. Understand how the strategic management of human resources contributes to the achievement of objectives of the HSBC.

1. Explain the purpose of the report and provide an overview of the importance of strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) within HSBC. (1.1).

2. For each example used, expand the chart to show that you have evaluated and assessed the purpose, importance and impact of strategic human resource management to the achievement of the HSBC's objectives from a medium- and long-term perspective. (1.1, 1.2, 1.3).

3. Finally explain the link between corporate strategy and human resource management strategy to show their interrelationship and how the human resource management strategy supports and contributes to purposes of HSBC. (1.3).

Task 2

II. Be able to develop human resource plans for the HSBC.

1. Analyse the influence of the HSBC's requirements and external environmental factors that dictate the need to plan human resources (2.1).

2. Discuss some human resource requirements within HSBC and then assess the human resource requirements for an identified specific situation. (2.2).

3. Develop a structured human resource plan that utilizes the results of the work completed for Task B with appropriate SMART targets. The plan needs to be critically evaluated to show how it can contribute to the achievement of objectives of the HSBC. (2.3).

4. Critically evaluate how your human resources plan can contribute to meeting the HSBC's objectives (2.4).

Task 3

III. Understand human resources policy requirements in the HSBC.
(This task could be an extension of task 2).

1. Within your new role you will develop an understanding of all the human resource policies utilised by the HSBC. Explain the purpose of human resource management policies in HSBC. (3.1).

2. Analyse compliance of the HR policies with legal and regulatory requirements. Analyse their impact on, and implications to, HSBC. (3.2).

IV. Be able to examine human resources management in HSBC.

1. Identify and define the structure and culture of HSBC and assess the impact they can have on the human resource management of HSBC. (4.1 and 4.2).
