Aim of the unit:
The aim and purpose of this unit is to give learners an understanding of how marketing, research and planning and the marketing mix are used by all organisations.

Assignment 1 - Types and Purpose of Business Information

Scenario

You have been considered for a new role within an organisation and have been tasked to carry out a research on a business organisation to explore how they manage and communicate information. Choose your preferred organisation and present your findings in a report to address the following questions:Task 1

P1. Explain different types of business information, where the information originates from and the purpose of the information and analyse them.

(You need to choose an organisation and investigate it in order to explain the different types of information verbal; written; onscreen; multi-media; web based that are being used, where this information originates and its purpose.)

M1. Analyse different types of business information and their sources

D1. Evaluate the appropriateness of business information used to make strategic decisions.

Note:

a. To achieve M1, you must analyse different types of information and their sources. Again this can be based on the information obtained from the business organisation that you have chosen to research and builds on the work undertaken for P1.

b. To achieve D1, you are to evaluate the appropriateness of information used to make important strategic decisions. You could look at financial performance, human resources needs or marketing decisions made in an organisation and evaluate whether the information used to make these decisions was appropriate. *(You should evaluate at least two sets of information which have been used to make strategic decisions.)

Assignment 2 - Corporate Communications of an organisation

Note: Your new role will require that you do an individual work on corporate communications of your chosen business.

Task 2

P2. Present complex internal business information using written document, verbal presentation and power point as appropriate in the context. Your presentation contents should include company mission statement, goals and objectives.

To achieve P2, you are required to either do a verbal presentation combined with a report on the information obtained. The information could be a financial report from a business which you could manipulate into a spreadsheet or chart. Alternatively, you could include a web page and a leaflet. You then submit the information to indicate the nature of its intended audience and its purpose. The information could be from your chosen organisation for P1.

P3. Produce corporate communications for your chosen organisation.
*(This could be an advert for a poster or a leaflet communicating information about the business or one of its products or services. The communication could be the information to be incorporated on a product's packaging or a design for the livery on delivery vehicles.)

P4. Evaluate the external corporate communications of an existing product or service.

D2. Evaluate the effectiveness of business information and its communication as key contributors to the success of an organisation, using examples to illustrate your points.

To achieve D2, you need to use illustrative examples as part of your evaluation as you investigate organisations that have excellent communication and information management systems and compare it with the situation in your chosen organisation.

Assignment 3 - Legal and Ethical Issues of an organisation, explaining operational issues

Note: Your work colleagues are very busy with other assignments and hence your line manager requires you to do further individual work on the legal and ethical issues of your chosen organisation and give explanation of their operational issues.

To achieve P5, you need to try and obtain the business organisation's policies on ethical issues in relation to business information and explain how that organisation complies with their legal obligations.

P6. Explain the operational issues in relation to the use of business information.

To achieve P6, you must include how the organisation ensures their information is secure.

In addition, you need to explain the health and safety issues associated with information management and also the development of new systems to manage information, the possible need for more complex software and staff training.

M2. Analyse the legal, ethical and operational issues in relation to the use of business information, using appropriate examples.

To achieve M2, you need to obtain information from a local organisation or your chosen organisation and build on your work for P5 and P6.
