Assessment 1 - Core Concept Essay: 2,000 Words, +/- (Excluding bibliography, footnotes & captions).

Choose one of the essay topics from the module and critically engage with the proposed concepts by framing them within relevant debates in game studies and adjacent fields, engaging with relevant scholarly (peer-reviewed) sources and using examples from video games as specified by the assessment instructions.

The goal of this assessment is to demonstrate that you understand the nuances of these concepts within the field of game studies. Your essay should clearly outline existing positions on the selected concepts by drawing on peer review scholarly literature from the module guide and external sources of your choice. You must use a minimum of four (4) academic sources (peer-reviewed), at least two (2) of which from the required readings in the module guide, while the other two (2) can be selected either from the required/suggested readings and/or from your own research. You can and are encouraged to use more sources from both module guide and/or personal research. Make sure to critically engage with the sources avoiding tokenistic references and striking the right balance between your ideas and the grounding in existing literature.

Assessment 2 - Game/Play Analysis: 2,500 words (+/- excluding bibliography, footnotes & captions; weighting)

The goal of this assessment is to demonstrate that you are able to analyse a game applying relevant theoretical concepts and critically reflecting on how the primary text (the game) and the secondary sources (the scholarly sources) inform each other. Your essay should provide an understanding of the game that informs and is informed by topics in game studies, showing how the game can be used to exemplify, deconstruct or even expand on relevant concepts. You should use the game analysis as a tool to reflect on theory, being aware of the context in which the game is produced, circulates and ultimately exists (avoid generalisations and demonstrate awareness of the limits of your analysis). Clearly introduce the game and its connections to the topic. Avoid lengthy summaries of plots and storylines unless necessary and relevant to your arguments. Make sure to state what aspects and parts of the game you intend to analyse and make effective use of those segments of text to discuss theoretical concern relevant to the selected topic.

This is not a review and you should avoid journalistic remarks and value judgments (adjectives such as bad, good, better, worse, amazing, horrible are not relevant in this context). You should not concern yourself with evaluating the quality of the game and rather understand what it does and how.

Example: you are not required to evaluate the quality of the cinematic elements of a game, but rather to analyse and explain what is cinematic in the game and how the sense or experience of the cinematic is constructing by it.

Your essay should clearly outline existing ideas on the selected topics by drawing on peer review scholarly literature from the module guide and external sources of your choice. You must use a minimum of four (4) academic sources (peer-reviewed), at least two (2) of which from the required readings, while the other two (2) can be selected from your own research and/or from other module readings (requested and suggested ones). You can and are encouraged to use more sources from both module readings and/or personal research. Make sure to critically engage with the sources avoiding tokenistic references and striking the right balance between your ideas and the grounding in existing literature.

Make sure to clearly state which game and which topics you are going to address at the beginning of the essay or in the title.
