Learning Outcomes -

Assessment - Building retrofit proposal

Your task is to describe in the form of a report, a detailed plan for one aspect of building retrofit. Ideally this should be one of the three retrofit measures identified from your Assignment A group report, although if you have re-considered these since, you may choose a different one with justification.

Your building retrofit plan should be for the case study building you used in Assignment A, which should save you time and duplication of work. However if this is unsuitable, you may choose a building type from the following:

1. Small hotel (at least 15 guest rooms, all en suite i.e. with bathroom), with reception, office, kitchen, restaurant, bar and small fitness room with exercise machines.

2. Primary school, 200 pupils (25 pupils per 60 m2 classroom), plus offices, staff room and hall for meals, assembly etc.)

3. Small light engineering/assembly plant, minimum 2000 m2, with requirement for high levels of lighting in most areas. To contain office area, small canteen serving drinks and light meals and storage area within building. Significant electricity use and some low temperature heat demand (below 300oC).

4. Another type of non domestic building, with a minimum 3000m2 gross internal floor area.

Report structure - The report structure is not fixed but should typically follow:

1. Choice of retrofit measure

Explaining why this one measure was chosen, perhaps through speed of payback, longevity, legislative compliance. You may justify this choice through text, or by other means such as a decision matrix.

2. Background to the retrofit measure chosen

Some detail as to the track record of the retrofit measure, including appropriate referencing, any history of technical, legislative drivers, etc. If the measure is novel, due, for example to the choice of building or climate, this is fine, as long as the basic idea is sound, but you do need to provide justification.

3. Technical details of the retrofit measure chosen

This section should contain all technical details of the retrofit measure. How the retrofit measure works, expected energy or cost savings, or improvements in indoor climate, or resource savings. How the measure is applied to an existing building, whether the building needs to be emptied first. You may include diagrams, hand drawn diagrams are fine.

4. Maintenance and management issues

Once a measure has been applied, there may be building management factors to consider, necessary training, or scheduled maintenance. All aspects of managing a building with respect to the retrofit measure should be detailed here. If these issues are minimal, this should be stated, with justification.

5. Human factors

Any improvements that may arise from the measure in comfort, health, wellbeing of building users.

6. Environmental and other impacts

The place of the retrofit in a wider context, e.g. whether it's components may be re-used or recycled at the end of the building's life, whether renewable/sustainable materials are used, other impacts such as building safety, security, fire safety should be detailed here, reductions in pollution or resource use. Any changes in future which may affect the measure, such as climate, or emergent technologies.
